Dr. Peter Breggin provides an unwanted conscience for the unethical,
backward and "business as usual" mental health system, which is increasingly Dr. Breggin's latest new book, co-authored by David Cohen, Ph.D., an expert on psychotropic drugs, dispels the myths that have led a large percentage of the US population to rely on psychoactive drugs as a solution to their life's problems. An imperfect solution at best, these drugs may be turning large numbers of human into mutants, drug company experiments. Harder to kick than heroin, they become a lifetime habit. No long term studies addressing potential permanent brain changes have ever been sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry, nor by a government that functions as glove to the hand of that industry, and of course they won't be, until that far off day when decent, responsible and accountable people have control of public policy. New data from Europe indicates that over 10 percent of people using legal psychoactive drugs have negative personality changes, including violence, induced by their use. I think these drugs belong with controlled substances; the industry practice of devoting huge profits to develop new drugs after their latest 'wonder' becomes jaded must be stopped. It's a very wide loophole, contrary to principles of public safety, that allows behavior modifying drugs as a tool for the unethical to divide and exploit the human situation for their own selfish and shortsighted purposes [namely $$$, power]. This loophole, brought about by unjustified medical/pharmaceutical/industrial prestige and influence, must be plugged. If you decide you've had enough of this hypocritical authoritarian quasimedical drug-pushing and its pretense to have your well-being uppermost in its priorities or know someone you have lost to this false panacea who may be willing to read this book, it can be the guide to why and how to safely taper off and quit use of dangerous and potentially addicting legal psychotropic drugs. One's chemicals can better be balanced by paying attention to proper nutrition, by positive thinking, spirituality, friendships and making lifestyle changes than by cooperating with big-buck Medicine's pushing drugs of such questionable long term value. This report by the National Council on Disability contains everything that the Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health did not: how the services provided by the current drug and shock-oriented mental hell-th system are perceived by the recipients of these services (the ultimate judges of whether such services are helpful or not), and their recommendations for much-needed change. From the Conclusion of the report: "Deprivation of human and civil rights cannot be tolerated in a country that was founded on the premise that everyone is created equal. The term "liberty and justice for all" must be underscored and applied for people labeled with psychiatric disabilities.
